Miscellaneous work

I enjoy the challenges, domain knowledge and partnerships gained as an independent contractor working with various organizations. Below are selected artifacts completed as the interaction designer, visual designer and/or digital illustrator.

Mobile application design for The Daily Show with Jon Stewart

I worked with the creative director and lead engineer at MTV/Comedy Central to design the user interface for the show's first Windows mobile application. The goal was to use the phone's debut as marketing leverage for the app's release. Our challenge was the limiting legal resources that we had to Microsoft's guides on styling and functionality.

Comedy Central wanted to focus on three UX features:

  • Notable quotes from an episode
  • Key topics from the show with the option to display as a list or a word cloud.
  • The ability for the user to schedule notifications for upcoming episodes

Netbook concept for The Associated Press

The Associated Press was another client who wanted to conceptualize an application prior to a device's debut — in their case, 'Netbook' for the first-generation iPad. I partnered with Perk Mobile, a software development company, to design an experience allowing the AP's users to view and rate categorized articles and photo galleries.

Pixel art for Smosh

At Defy Media, I became a lead designer & illustrator for Smosh — a top-viewed comedy channel on YouTube — to redesign their website and native mobile applications. Ian and Anthony, the Smosh duo, loved bright colors and pixel art; so I partnered with stakeholders and developers to revamp Smosh's art direction. We debuted game mechanics to rely less on advertisements, and more on audience engagement, to meet revenue goals. For example: a player can purchase tokens to quickly advance their game levels.

Digital advent calendar for XFinity

XFinity's December 2011 Holiday Advent Calendar was a fun Facebook application that I created with Luxurious Animals, a design & development agency. I worked with a front-end developer on its interaction design. The goal was to allow an XFinity customer to return to the calendar daily to reveal a hidden prize after viewing "naughty" or "nice" sponsored content.

Artograph concept for Red Bull

In 2011, I worked with a creative agency on a new initiative by Red Bull — the 'Artograph'. This web application allowed sponsored athletes to digitally sign autographs on top of images uploaded by their fans. I designed the user interface of the Artograph's management system from the perspective of a logged-in athlete. Athletes were able to select a submitted photograph, edit a signature style, and publish the signed photo for the fan to view. Certain restrictions applied, for example: If a photo included a message from the fan, then the athlete could not respond.
